Consumer and Investor Advisory Council

OBSI's Consumer and Investor Advisory Council (CIAC) was created in 2010 to provide the input of consumers and investors into OBSI's governance and operations, complementing the input OBSI regularly received from industry stakeholders and regulatory and government officials.

On June 13, 2022, OBSI released the results of the 2021 independent evaluation of its operations and practices for investment related complaints conducted by Professor Poonam Puri. An important recommendation in the report called for OBSI’s board to undertake a strategic review of its governance structure, including considering the role of the CIAC and alternative ways to improve and enhance input from consumer and industry stakeholders.

On June 26, 2023, OBSI announced the changes to its governance structure, which increased the number of designated consumer interest directors from one to three. OBSI also announced it was expanding its formal stakeholder outreach efforts, by establishing separate bi-annual meetings with consumer groups and industry associations, and committed to pursuing other stakeholder input strategies, including establishing task forces, working groups, conducting surveys, and establishing focus groups on an as-needed basis for specific projects. With these enhancements to consumer engagement directly on the board, and increased stakeholder outreach, OBSI’s board decided not to reconvene the CIAC.

OBSI appreciates the contributions of all past CIAC members who provided OBSI’s board with valuable and impactful insights over many years, and looks forward to continuing to meet the needs of all stakeholders.
